The distinction that matters is optical versus digital. Digital zoom enlarges pixels you already have and produces a bigger blur; optical zoom uses the lens to actually gather detail at distance. A long-range camera with sufficient optical zoom can identify a face or read a plate across a yard where a fixed camera would show a shape.

The most common mistake on large properties is buying a high-resolution fixed camera and expecting it to cover a yard. Resolution determines how much detail is captured across the field of view, but if the lens spreads that field across two hundred feet, each object gets very few pixels regardless of the sensor. The result is a sharp image of a large area in which no individual person is identifiable.
Optical zoom is what actually recovers detail at distance, because the lens concentrates the sensor on a smaller area. That is the entire reason PTZ and long-range cameras exist, and it is why we size zoom range against measured distances rather than selling a resolution number.
A PTZ is powerful and has one real weakness: it looks in exactly one direction at a time. If it is zoomed in on the gate when something happens at the dock, it did not record the dock. Anyone who sells you a PTZ as a complete solution for a large property has left you a gap you will only discover during an incident.
The correct design pairs them. Fixed cameras provide continuous wide coverage so nothing goes unrecorded, and the PTZ provides identification detail on demand or on trigger. Where analytics are in place, a detection can drive the PTZ to the right preset automatically — you get continuous coverage and close detail, which neither type delivers alone.
Zoom range and image quality at distance are the main hardware drivers, but mounting is often the larger cost on big properties. A camera at the far corner of a yard needs a pole or mast, power, network, and a cable path — and on open ground those runs are expensive, which is exactly when a wireless link and solar power become the cheaper answer.
