The single most common failure we are called to fix is an LPR camera installed like a general surveillance camera: mounted too high, aimed too wide, with a lens meant for a scene rather than a plate. It produces a nice picture of a car and unreadable plates, which is precisely backwards from what the customer bought.
LPR is a measurement instrument, not a viewing camera. It needs a narrow field aimed at where plates actually pass, at an angle within tolerance, with exposure set for a retroreflective surface at night rather than for the whole scene. Getting those four things right is most of the job, and it is why we survey the specific lane before quoting anything.
